NEWS REPORTS THAT HALEIGH CUMMINGS’ BONES FOUND ARE FALSE

In this business, you have to be cautious. The biggest lesson I have learned is reporting something first does not make you a better journalist. Reporting something accurate does. Last night on cable news, it was reported that little Haleigh Cummings’ bones were discovered in the St. Johns River. Today after the media descended on Satsuma, FL, and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) was flooded with calls, PCSO released a statement (see statement below) saying that the reports were false. What they found were animal bones. These rumors left the other media, police, case watchers and, more importantly, the family with a false sense of hope and closure.

MEDIA RELEASE
Date: April 21, 2010
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous inquiries regarding the recovery of the skeletal remains of missing 5 year-old Haleigh Cummings. A rumor has spread throughout our community that her body has been located. This rumor is false, and this information has been vastly misreported and sensationalized by the media.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office did recover animal remains such as alligator claws and teeth, and a multiple animal bones. The agency had an anthropologist at the scene that identified all “biological” items that were recovered as being non-human. Additionally, Misty Croslin could have easily seen these items while she was at the dock while the dive operation was in progress.

In an effort to prevent this false information from impeding our investigation, Sheriff Hardy wants to quell these rumors so we can maintain our focus on the criminal investigation.

  1. More egg on the fact of L.E. They better take another look because Nancy Grace of CNN has already confirmed it to be Haleigh. And, Nancy wouldn’t report her wrongful speculations, would she? Just because Nancy Grace is almost 95% wrong all the time, doesn’t mean that one should not believe what spews out from her flared-nostriled-face, does it?

  2. Another day goes by and Haleigh is “lost in the shuffle” in the name of “breaking news”. How disrespectful for a missing child.

We, in the State of Florida, are in big trouble if an anthropologist can’t quickly identify whether bones are human or animal.

Who at the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office is leaking information to the “breaking news” idiots? It appears someone is trying to make the PCSO’s look inept. It’s time for an internal investigation and/or for the Attorney General’s office or another agency to take over the Haleigh Cummings missing child investigation.

Enough is enough of this crap!

  3. With all this egg on the face of Law Enforcement (prosecution) because of all their many screw-ups so far, how much more egg will stick before the entire prosecution’s case crumbles into an omelet?

  4. Nice post! You truly have a wonderful way of writing which I find captivating! I will definitely be bookmarking you and returning to your blog. In fact, your post reminded me about a strange thing that happened to me the other day. I’ll tell you about that later…
