I’ve posted a link below from VOA website to a story that needs attention. This is a huge problem. My father lived in Mexico for years, but returned after growing concern for his safety. I worked extensively in Mexico, and as beautiful as it is, it is also very dangerous. They will kidnap you off the streets, make you take money from the bank machine, then hold you for 24 hours until you can take more money out. Then dispose of you like trash.
One one occasion I traveled to the outskirts of Guadalajara with Mark Fuhrman when we were both at FOX. We were covering the Cesar Laurean case, a young marine who had murdered his pregnant girlfriend then fled to Mexico. We went to Mexico to follow leads as to were he was. When we finally located him, before police did, and took the info the Mexican authorities, they said there was nothing they could do because the US HAD NOT filed the correct paperwork; and he wasn’t actually “wanted” in Mexico. He was eventually caught. We travelled with a driver and an interpreter when we were there. I remember how beautiful it was, the small villages, but we never forgot the danger we were in.
How do we fix this problem??
